Tillandsia tectorum is a great beginner air plant, especially for those who live in a dry home or who forget to water! This species is native to Ecuador and Peru where they grow alongside more classic succulents like agave and cacti. Air plants are typically found in more tropical areas, so what makes this one unique? The long, fuzzy trichomes covering the leaves of this Tillandsia serve two purposes- to shield the leaves from harsh sunlight and to assist in water absorption. Tillandsia tectorum is a notoriously slow grower and has the potential to bloom at any time of year. Detailed care instructions can be found here and will be sent along with the plant.
Air plants are pet safe, so no worries here! I will often warn cat owners that many air plants are also cat toy shaped! They make perfect additions to topical reptile and amphibian enclosures. They are best secured with fishing line for easy removal should the plants need additional care or to be moved around the enclosure to assist with enrichment.
