Tillandsia ionantha is typically seen as a smaller air plant, often ranging in size from 2-6 inches tall and wide. Despite being called "air plants," they still need to be watered- they just don't need soil. In fact, if they are planted in soil, they will rot out! The name "air plant" comes from the fact that they grow "up in the air" on trees. They are easy to care for and hardy in the home, only requiring misting during the week and the occasional soak. Members of the bromeliad family, Bromeliaceae, are pet safe- so no worries for our furry friends! Air plants make great additions to high humidity tropical enclosures, like crested gecko or frog enclosures. If mounting in a gecko enclosure, be sure to mist daily to avoid the need for the monthly soak. They should not need additional watering other than the occasional misting for frog enclosures.
