Little Gem is a hybrid between butterhead and romaine lettuce. This gives it the crunch of romaine with the sweetness of butterhead. When mature, this variety of lettuce grows 8" high and produces a compact heart that is an ideal sides for single salads and sandwiches. As a cool weather crop, lettuce does best in spring and fall and does not tolerate the heat of summer. Little Gem is unique, as it will last into summer and is slow to bolt.
500 organic seeds per packet.
Sow the seeds 1/4" deep directly into the garden 2 weeks before the last frost date. Thin plants to 10" apart. Germination will occur 5-10 days later. Germination is faster in late summer for the fall harvest. To stagger harvest, sow seeds every three weeks. Fall planting is best begun 10 weeks prior to the first frost.
