Also called early sunflower, this prolific bloomer is native to most of the US. All along the east coast and west to New Mexico, this plant calls sunny sites home. This plant can tolerate moist to dry soils in clearings, prairies, fields, and garden settings. The moisture tolerance makes false sunflower a good choice for rain gardens. While it can tolerate drought, it may wilt while doing so. Flowers make good cut specimens and this species will bloom so prolifically that there are plenty to share with the butterflies and bees while taking a nice bouquet inside to enjoy. These long lasting flowers will begin to bloom in mid to late spring and continue into fall. This is a local ecotype to SW PA and no cultivated varieties were used in the production of these plants.
