Tillandsia seleriana is native to the cloud forests of southern Mexico and El Salvador with a bulbous, hollow base and fuzzy trichomes. This species has one unique change to the care typical care instructions. Because of the hollow bottom on this air plant, it is best to not soak them to prevent water from remaining between the leaves, ultimately causing rot. Instead, to give this plant a deep soak, run the leaves under the faucet until they are all damp, being careful not to turn the plant upright under the flow of the water, still avoiding getting water in the base of the plant. Detailed care instructions can be found here and will be sent along with the plant with a note of the altered directions.
Air plants are pet safe, so no worries here! I will often warn cat owners that many air plants are also cat toy shaped! They make perfect additions to topical reptile and amphibian enclosures. They are best secured with fishing line for easy removal should the plants need additional care or to be moved around the enclosure to assist with enrichment.
