Butterworts (Pinguicula spp.) are carnivorous! They secrete a sticky mucilage from their leaves that traps small insects like fungus gnats and mosquitoes. This mucilage can give the leaves an oily appearance and feel, shedding some light on the genus name which translates to "little oily one." The flowers on Pinguicula spp. are orchid-like and can last for weeks! These plants are very easy to care for and are beginner friendly. For detailed care information, click here. A care sheet will also be sent with each purchase.

Pinguicula gigantea is the biggest Mexican ping out there! They are able to reach up to 12 inches in diameter, though they often stay smaller in cultivation, only reaching 6 to 8 inches on average in the home setting. The red variety flushes a brownish red in bright light. Healthy plants can still be green, depending on light levels.

Carnivorous plants are pet safe, so no worries here! These plants are much more dangerous to insects.

Plants will be shipped bare root and are suitable for a 2 to 3 inch pot. Photos are representative and some natural variation should be expected. Regular potting soil contains fertilizers which will kill carnivorous plants. Carnivorous plant soil can be purchased here.
