Butterworts (Pinguicula spp.) are carnivorous! They secrete a sticky mucilage from their leaves that traps small insects like fungus gnats and mosquitoes. This mucilage can give the leaves an oily appearance and feel, shedding some light on the genus name which translates to "little oily one." Pinguicula gigantea is the biggest Mexican ping out there! They are able to reach up to 12 inches in diameter, though they often stay smaller in cultivation, only reaching 6 to 8 inches on average in the home setting. The red variety flushes a brownish red in bright light. Healthy plants can still be green, depending on light levels.
