Old Mexico cacti have been selectively bred for its virtually thornless pads. Typically, Opuntia gomei has impressive thorns that will keep even the most curious desert animals away. Virtually does not mean completely, and there are still some small glochids that can be stuck in your skin for days. When handling this cactus, be aware of the areolas, the small areas where thorns would typically emerge from.
Opuntia, like many cacti are pet safe. Also like many cacti, they can have some pretty impressive thorns. As mentioned above, the thorns have been mostly bred out of this variety, but some remain. So while they are non toxic, their thorns are something to consider for curious cats and dogs. Their thorns also make them unsafe for reptile enclosures.
Plants will be shipped bare root and are suitable for a 6 inch pot. Photos are representative and some natural variations should be expected.
