Milkweed is the only plant Monarch Butterflies can eat in their caterpillar stage, meaning it is integral for their survival! There are many species of milkweed, but Asclepias syriaca is the one many of us are most familiar with. Their fragrant flowers form pink balls in summer that specialized bees, butterflies, and other pollinators flock to. These plants will grow 3-5 feet tall, and will naturalize well in most garden settings. It is best used in naturalized areas, pollinator gardens, cottage style gardens, meadows, and native gardens, but its habit of naturalizing does not make it ideal for borders.
Common milkweed is tolerant of deer, drought, erosion and poor soil. It will also help to fight erosion. It attracts bees, butterflies, songbirds, pollinators, and specialized bees.
