Pinguicula primuliflora is named after its primrose-like flowers. This species is native to the southeastern USA and is found in areas with nutrient poor soils.

Plants in the Pinguicula genus, or butterworts, are a type of carnivorous plants, meaning they lure, capture, and digest prey! They do this with flypaper traps similar to sundews (Drosera sp.). The leaves of Pinguicula are covered in short, glandular hairs that secrete sticky mucilage. Small prey, like mosquitoes, fungus gnats, and fruit flies are attracted to the shiny leaves, then are unable to escape the sticky trap and are digested right there on the leaves! Butterworts are often grown for their orchid-like flowers that last for weeks on end, and are often followed closely behind by a second or third flower bud to replace the first.

Carnivorous plants can be intimidating, but never fear! All carnivorous plants are shipped with a care sheet. To read more about butterwort care, click here. The biggest thing to remember is these plants should be watered with distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water only! Tap, well, and bottled water often have far too many minerals dissolved in the water, which can negatively impact your carnivorous plant's health. Should you want to re-pot your butterwort, be sure to use carnivorous plant soil, which can be purchased here.
