Butterworts (Pinguicula spp.) are carnivorous! They secrete a sticky mucilage from their leaves that traps small insects like fungus gnats and mosquitoes. This mucilage can give the leaves an oily appearance and feel, shedding some light on the genus name which translates to "little oily one." Pinguicula esseriana 'Agua de Leon' has a clear dormant stage with smaller, succulent leaves. Active, carnivorous leaves have a "Drool edge" so the dew is trapped and prey won't slide off. Mature plants are about 1 inch in diameter.
Carnivorous plants are pet safe, so no worries here! These plants are much more dangerous to insects.
