Butterworts (Pinguicula spp.) are carnivorous! They secrete a sticky mucilage from their leaves that traps small insects like fungus gnats and mosquitoes. This mucilage can give the leaves an oily appearance and feel, shedding some light on the genus name which translates to "little oily one." Pinguicula ehlersiae is a Mexican species originally collected from a location near Guadalcázar. The flowers are a lovely shade of pink to match the leaves, which grow to be a more intense shade in brighter light. This is a small species, maturing to 1.5-2 inches in diameter.
